De Tarakan Airstrip (een voormalige KNIL-vliegveld) is tijdens de Japanse bezetting gebruikt en op 3 mei 1945 door de Geallieerden veroverd. Het vliegveld werd gerepareerd en vervolgens door de RAAF doorgebruikt.
