De slag om Villers-Bocage zag de Britse 22nd Armoured Brigade in actie komen om daarbij ruim twintig tanks en andere voertuigen te verliezen door toedoen van de Tigers van Michael Wittman's 101e SS Zware Panzer Bataljon. Hoewel Duitse publicisten de rol van Wittman overdreven is er geen twijfel over het succes van zijn bataljon in ondertal tegen inferieur wapenmateriaal. De tekst op het monument, op de weg het dorp in vanaf Caen: "Remember with pride and gratitude those of the 7th Armoured Division who fought and died here for freedom on 13th June 1944"
