Deze luchthaven was tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog een Luftwaffe-basis voor o.a. Messerschmitt Me-262's. De oude luchtsverkeertoren uit 1937 staat er nog. Generaal Eisenhower heeft het vliegveld op 12 oktober 1945 bezocht (zie foto 2).
