Deze luchthaven is in 1935 door de Nederlandse overheid aangelegd als KNIL-vliegveld. Het vliegveld is in 1942 door de Japanners veroverd en uitgebreid door krijgsgevangenen. De Nederlanders hebben het vliegveld in 1945 nog een keer uitgebreid.
