De bekende pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman had zich in 1944 in dit gebouw verstopt. Hij werd vervolgens ontdekt door de Duitse officier Wilm Hosenfeld, die hem hielp de oorlog te overleven. Deze gebeurtenis is later vereeuwigd in de bekende film "The Pianist".
