Matupi Harbor is tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog sporadisch door kleine Japanse schepen gebruikt. Het Japanse leger bouwden hier aantal kustbatterijen om Blanche Bay te beschermen. Een Kawanishi H6K dat tijdens een luchtaanval in de buurt zonk zou door vulkaanas bedekt zijn. Haar restant was tot 1994 zichtbaar.
