PBY Catalina A24-9 werd op 21 januari 1942 als eerste geallieere verkenningsvlieguitg boven Papoea-Nieuw-Guinea neergehaald en stortte bij het dorpje Yambo neer. Acht bemanningsleden kwamen om het leven. Een bemanningslid overleefde de crash.
