De voormalige Johan Willem Frisokazerne werd tijdens de Duitse bezetting omgedoopt tot Kommodore Bonte Kaserne en huisvestigde een garnizoen Kriegsmarinepersoneel. De kazerne is tijdens Market Garden gebombardeerd. Het complex speelde ook een rol tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog en de Indonesische Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog.
